On Pixeliste, we regularly present you various results of the photo contest. The opportunity to discover fabulous landscapes and portraits made by photographers from all over the world.Amazing Photo.
Today, we have decided to present you with a special competition as it concerns only photographs related to science, and captured by scientists.Created by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, an English institution that provides funding for research in the United Kingdom, this photo competition rewards each year the best shots taken by researchers and scientists in relation to their work.
An original way for these scientists to value their work, and to get it out of the institutional shackles. If it remains a little bit confidential, with only 100 entries recorded this year in the five categories that make it up (Eureka & Discovery, Equipment & Facilities, People & Skills, Innovation and Weird & Wonderful), this competition still offers some absolutely unbelievable entries.Just like the photograph that wins this year.
Captured by David Nadlinger, it unveils a unique positively charged Strontium atom, held prisoner by electric fields in a special machine. What makes this shot so great is that this atom, illuminated by a blue-violet laser, is visible to the naked eye between the two electrodes generating the electric field that keeps it in place.
To get an idea of the scale, know that the space between these two electrodes is only two millimeters. An amazing photograph, so beautiful in its own way, that David Nadlinger captured with a simple, long-exposure camera as part of his quest for quantum computers. The winners in each category are visible on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council website, while below you will find some of our favorite shots.
